Abstract:
This research is conducted on factors affecting fruit and vegetable market supply in Gondar.
Fruits and vegetables are highly perishable and affected by different microbial contaminates
from production to consumption. The main objective of the study was to determine the effect of
access to credit, distance, price of product, Extension service, Market information, land own size
and input factor on market supply by using questionnaire and focus group discussion. A simple
random sampling technique was used and the questionnaires were distributed to 350
respondents in 3 kebeles. The study also used focus group discussion with purposive sampling
method. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 20 for descriptive and inferential statistics. The
result shows the major determinant factors were credit access, distance, price of product,
Extension service, Market information, land own size and input factors together accounted for
72.1% of variance in market supply. Finally, the researcher recommends for taking appropriate
measures in production side, market infrastructure, arrangements and institutions through the
provision of seminars and workshops where farmers would acquire more training on fruit and
vegetable production to improve the market supply for functioning of the marketing system.
