The objective of this study was to investigate determinants of sesame market supply in Metema
district of west Gondar zone. Thus, applying descriptive and explanatory research designs, a total
of 375(male=289 &female=86) household heads who involved in sesame production involved in
the study using stratified random sampling technique. The study used quantitative data which
were collected using a pilot tested household survey questionnaire having five-point Likert scale.
Data analysis was undertaken using statistical software, SPSS version 24. Particularly,
frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson correlation and multiple linear
regressions were used. Findings of Pearson Correlation revealed that sesame market supply has
statistically significant positive relationship with sesame productivity (r=0.953, p<0.01), sesame
market price (r=0.819, p<0.01), sesame market information (r=0.980, p<0.01) and access to
credit (r=0.946, p<0.01). The overall regression model shows that sex, age, educational level,
sesame productivity, sesame market price, sesame market information, sesame farming
experience and access to credit significantly affect sesame market supply. All predictor variables
explained about 78.4% variation in sesame market supply in the study area. Market information
is the most important determinant factor for sesame market supply. Access to credit is the second
most important predictor followed by sesame market productivity, sesame price, sesame farming
experience, educational level, sex and age of household heads. It is recommended that Metema
woreda agricultural office and kebele administrations are recommended to work jointly to
facilitate the provision and supply of agricultural inputs for sesame producers in order to increase
sesame productivity and production in study area. |
