Abstract:
Background: Antenatal care is an obstetrical care given for women during pregnancy which is cornerstone for improving prenatal outcomes. Although, WHO recommended first Antenatal care visit be within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, women still do not have adequate and equal access to high-quality of early antenatal care. Therefore, this study aimed to identify determinants of early antenatal care service utilization among pregnant women will be important to improve quality of maternal and child health care services. Therefore, this study aimed to identify determinants of antenatal care service utilization during first trimester among pregnant women. Objective: To identify determinants of Antenatal care service utilization during first trimester among pregnant women in East Dembia district health Facilities Northwest Ethiopia 2023. Method: Facility based unmatched case control was conducted on 517 pregnant women (174 cases and 343 controls) from January 1 to April 30, 2023 in East Dembia, Ethiopia, 2023. Cases were pregnant women who initiated ANC within 12 weeks of pregnancy; and controls were pregnant women who initiated attending ANC latter than 12 complete weeks of gestation. Data was edited, code and entered in to Epi data version 4.6.0.0 and then exported to and analyze by STATA version 14. Frequencies and percentages were computed. Bi variable logistic regression model was fitted and having p<0.2 were entered into multivariable logistic regression analysis method. In multivariable analysis variables with P<0.05 were statistically significant and AOR with 95% CI was reported. Results; In this study being urban residence (AOR=3.78(95% CI: (1.8, 7.5)), wanted pregnancy (AOR=3.07 (95% CI: (1.47, 6.3)), high decision making power (AOR=1.96 (95% CI :( 1.2, 3.14)), strong social support (AOR=6.3 (95% CI :( (3.2, 12.4)) And traveling time less than 30 minutes (AOR=6.1 (95% CI :( (2.9,12.8)) were determinates on ANC service utilization during first trimester of pregnancy.
Conclusion; The study revealed that urban residence, high decision making power, wanted pregnancy, strong social support and traveling time <30 minutes were independent predictors of use of ANC service during first trimester of pregnancy
