Abstract:
Agricultural cooperatives play a vital role in enhancing farmers' productivity and market access,
thereby increasing incomes. However, member participation in multipurpose agricultural
cooperatives (MPACs) remains low, particularly in the Tacharmachiho District. This study
investigates the factors influencing participation levels in MPACs, focusing on measuring
participation, assessing satisfaction with service delivery, and identifying key influencing factors.
A sample of 186 members was selected from four MPACs using a combination of probability and
non-probability sampling techniques. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires,
interviews, focus group discussions, and personal observations. Quantitative data were analyzed
using descriptive statistics and an ordinal logit model, while qualitative data underwent thematic
analysis. Members' satisfaction with cooperative services was assessed using a 5-point Likert
scale across nine service areas. Findings reveal that respondents generally perceived services
such as the delivery of fertilizer, herbicides, and farm machinery positively, alongside reasonably
priced consumer goods and fair purchasing rates for their agricultural products. However,
issues regarding the adequate supply of consumer goods, improved seed distribution, and regular
dividend payments were noted negatively. Participation levels were categorized as low (77%),
medium (17%), and high (6%). Of the fifteen variables analyzed, nine significantly influenced
participation at the 5% level, including education, household size, income, landholding,
extension contact, distance to home, training access, road access, and media accessibility. In
conclusion, this study highlights the critical issue of low member engagement in MPACs, with
only 6% of members actively participating. While some services received positive feedback,
substantial concerns about seed delivery and dividends were identified. The findings emphasize
that participation is significantly affected by nine variables. To enhance member participation,
the study recommends improving service delivery, increasing member engagement, and reducing
barriers to participation through better governance and collaboration within Tacharmachiho
District's MPACs.
