Abstract:
Functional recovery among people with schizophrenia is a serious clinical concern which has great
impact on the economy and society. This is due attention was not given to the functional recovery
of people with schizophrenia rather than focusing on symptom reduction. This study aims to assess
functional recovery and associated factors among people with schizophrenia attending follow-up
at Eka Kotebe General Hospital. A cross sectional study design was conducted; the target
population of the study was people with schizophrenia attending follow-up at Eka Kotebe General
Hospital and systematic random sampling technique was used to select a total number of 422
samples. Data was collected using structured questionnaire that included functional recovery as
measured by Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia scale (FROGS). The data were
analyzed using frequency, Mean, Standard deviation and Simple and multiple linear regression
with 95% confidence interval. The result indicate that the mean (± SD) score of FROGS scale was
39.69 (±21.99). People with schizophrenia had low mean score on all domain of FROGS scale. On
daily life skill functioning domain, the social functioning domain, the health and treatment domain,
the occupational functioning domain was 13.37 ± 6.98, 14.50 ± 9.08, 8.11± 5.40, and 3.69 ±2.15
respectively. Marital status, occupational status, strong social support, medication adherence,
types of treatment received, internalized stigma and current use of substance were associated with
functional recovery among patients of schizophrenia. In conclusion functional recovery among
people with schizophrenia was low. The study suggest that ultimate goal of interventions to
improve functional recovery have paramount importance in people with schizophrenia.
