Abstract
Background: Providing a compassionate and respectful maternity care during labour
and delivery is one of the enhancing factors to promote facility child delivery. Since
Ethiopian health sector transformation plan has included CRC as one of the
transformation agendas and additional lack of researches conducted on compassionate
care, this paper was aimed to assess the status of respectful, compassionate care and
their associated factors in North-West Amhara Referral Hospitals.
Objective: To assess the status of compassionate, respectful care and associated factors
among mothers attending delivery services in West Amhara referral hospitals, 2020.
Methods: An institutional based cross-sectional study embedded with a supportive
qualitative study was conducted from March 2-May 8, 2020 G.C. A total of 410 mothers who
gave birth in referral hospitals of the West Amhara were selected using a systematic
random sampling technique by proportional allocation. Variables associated with respectful
and compassionate care was tested using bi-variable binary logistic regression analysis and
variables with a p-value of less than 0.2 were tested again with multivariable binary logistic
regression. Variables with a p-value of less than 0.05 were identified to be significantly
associated factors using multivariable logistic regression.
For the qualitative part in-depth interview was conducted on 7 midwives. The key informant
interview was transcribed, translated and entered into open code software then thematic
analysis was done.
Results: The overall status of respectful and compassionate care was found to be 56.3%
(95%; CI: 52.0, 61.4%) and 55.4% (95%; CI: 50.7, 60.5%) respectively. Number of Anti
Natal care follow up, place of delivery of previous pregnancy, and delivery time(day and
night) were significantly associated with respectful care while, marital status of the mother
and Number of Anti Natal Care follow up were associated with compassionate care.
Conclusion and recommendation: nearly above half of the mothers experienced
compassionate and respectful care which is a very low status. Since respectful and
compassionate care during delivery is one of the predictors of mothers? choice where to
deliver, efforts ranging from service delivery to working environment should be mad
health care providers and stake holders to make the service more compassionate and
respectful.
