Abstract:
Abstract
Background: The coronavirus infection causes respiratory and intestinal diseases.
Corona virus (COVID-19) disease is the major pandemic disease in the world. Studies
evaluating COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and WTP are limited, especially in low- and
middle-income countries.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess willingness to pay for COVID-19
Vaccine and Its associated factors among households in Gondar city, 2021.
Methods: A community based quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted
among 600 households in Gondar city from April 16 to May 16, 2021. Multistage
random sampling technique was used to select household heads. The Contingent
Valuation method was used to estimate the benefit of the program by eliciting the WTP
of the households. Data was collected using pilot structured questionnaire. The data
were entered into Epi-Data version 4.6 and exported to STATA version-14 Software
for analysis. Statistical test was considered significant at P value less than 0.05. Tobit
model was used to analysis the determinants of willingness to pay.
Result: A total of 600 household heads were participated in the study with a response
rate of 99.50%. The proportion of willingness to pay was 55.33%. The mean and SD
amount of money households were willing to pay was ETB253.28±90.76. Residence
urban (?; 62.71, 95% CI: 13.18, 112.24), age 40-49 years (?; -45.40 95% CI: -87.00,
-3.81) employed and merchant occupation (?; 55.07, 95%CI: 10.92, 99.23) and (?;
78.30, 95%CI:39.45, 117.17), chronic illness (?; 56.76, 95%CI=21.65, 91.86)
perceived risk of infection (?; 41.27, 95%CI:11.17, 71.38), and rich wealth status (?;
47.64, 95%CI:12.80, 82.48) were significantly associated factors with WTP for
COVID-19 vaccine at P-value of <0.05.
Conclusion: In this study more than half (55.33%) of household heads were WTP for
COVID-19 vaccine. Residence, age, occupation, chronic illness, perceived risk of
infection and Wealth status of the respondents were statistically associated factors.
