Abstract
Background: Occupational accidents and work-related diseases cause over 2.3
million deaths annually; nearly 860,000 people are injured every day globally. However,
there are No studies that specifically determine the magnitude and associated factors
of occupational injury in Brewery workers in Ethiopia.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated
factors of occupational injury among workers in Harar Brewery Factory, Harar, Eastern
Ethiopia.
Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study design was implemented from
March 18 to April 20, 2018 among 410workers who were selected by stratified
samplingtechniquein each department and draw sample from each department
proportionally by computer generating technique. Amharic version questionnaires were
used to collect the data with face to face interview using trained six data collectors and
two supervisors. Data was entered into Epi Info version 7 and exported to SPSS
Version 20 software for data cleaning and further analysis.Binary logistic regression
model for bivariate and multivariable analyses were applied to explore the relation
between the dependent and independent variables using crude and adjusted odds ratio
with 95% CI, respectively. Finally, to determine the factors associated with occupational
injury after controlling confounders. Variables with P-value <0.05 in the final model were
considered statistically significant.
Results: The annual prevalence of occupational injury was 19.5% with 95%CI (15.9,
23.1). Abrasion was the common injury and hand figures were the most affected body
parts.Employment type being temporarily [AOR 10.893,95%CI: (3.800, 31.226)], work
environment related factors like extra working hours [AOR 5.319 95%CI: (1.994,
14.190)], among the behavioral factors, job stress [AOR 8.56295%CI: (2.632, 27.855),
Personal Protective Equipment use[AOR0.109 95%C.I:(0.038, 0.312)] anddrinking
alcohol [AOR 6.72195%C.I:(3.357, 13.458)] were statistically significant factors to
determine occupational injuries among Brewery workers.
Conclusion: The magnitude of occupational injury in brewery workers was relatively
low in study area. Temporarily employment, extra working hours, job stress, status of
PPE use and alcohol use were the identified predictors for occupational injury in
brewery workers.Occupational injury among brewery workers may not be ignorable
health problem. There for, monitoring and control strategy could be recommended to
prevent occupational injury among brewery workers.
