Abstract
Background: Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders in
workplaces. However, the burden of LBP is not well studied among female hairdressers
Therefore; determining the magnitude and identifying factors of LBP among female
hairdressers is one of the key issues in improving the safety and health of the
employees.
Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of Low back pain and
associated factors among female hairdressers in Jimma town south west Ethiopia,
2020.
Method: An institution based cross-sectional a study was carried out from February to
March 2020; a total of 402 study participants were selected using simple random
sampling method. Interviewer administered standardized questionnaire was used to
collect data. Data was entered by Epi data 3.1version and then exported to SPSS 20.0
version for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression was used to identify
factors associated with Low back pain. Variables with p-value<0.25 were exported to
multivariable logistic regression model. Significant association was ascertained at pvalue <0.05.
Results: Out of 402 study participants 385 (95.7%) of them provided data. The mean
age was 25.99 (Standard Deviation (SD±5.007)) years. The prevalence of low back pain
in the last 12 months was 44.9% (N=173), 95% CI: (39.9- 49.0] and seven days
prevalence was 15.6%, (N=27) 95%CI (10.4 – 21.4)]. In this study older age [AOR:
2.59, 95% CI, (1.36, 4.96)], absence of adjustable washing basin [AOR: 3.22, 95% CI,
(1.37, 7.54)],lack of training [AOR: 3.22, 95% CI, (1.65, 6.30)], number of customers
attending per day[AOR: 3.15, 95% CI, (2.43, 4.07)] and job stress[AOR: 2.56, 95% CI,
(1.43, 4.58)] were significantly associated with LBP.
Conclusion: This study indicated that significant proportion of female hairdressers
experienced LBP in the last one year. Higher age, absence of adjustable washing basin,
lack of training, number of customer and job stress show significant association with low
back pain. Thus, furnishing adjustable washing basin, providing health and safety
training, reducing job stress and work overload be emphasized to reduce the problem.
