Abstract:
Substance use is linked to diverse areas of life and has been associated with various factors,
treatment should be multifaceted in comparison to routine care only and should take into
account of differences in socio-demographic and substance use related characteristics. Most
People with substance-related disorders do not seek psychotherapeutic service due to
barriers. The aim ofthis study was to investigate the current status and barriers of providing
psychotherapy for people with substance used disorder. A qualitative study, specifically
descriptive phenomenological approach was employed. Four patients, four psychotherapy
professional’s medical director were purposively selected for semi structured interview at
addiction ward library. Furthermore, document analysis, and observation were employed.
The collected interviews were analyzed, using thematic analysis on the issues namely, most
commonly used substance, current status of providing psychotherapy, barriers/challenges to
provide psychotherapeutic service (patient, professional, and structural/organizational
related). The result of this study showed that the current status of psychotherapy done in
group and individual the treatment has it Owe manual and standard participants. Providing
psychotherapy has different barriers that related to, patient, therapeutic service provider and
organization. Under patient related barriers fear of stigmatization, negatively perceived
needs and lack of awareness were the main barriers that patients experienced. Related with
therapeutic service provider lack of continuous follow up by a psychologist and availability
problems of the provider were identified as a barriers. Structurally or organizationally there
were two main barriers that of infrastructural and lack of attention for the treatment. There
is a need to promote awareness in the community especially on psychotherapeutic help
seeking. In addition, psychologist should take in to account the individuals perspective while
providing psychotherapy. In general, there is a need for improving quality of mental health
service.
