Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of audio visual aids in speaking with
the focus of Grade Eight in English speaking classes. To this end, a quasi-experimental
research design was employed. Since the study targeted grade eight students in Kebele-19
primary school which was conveniently selected, the total population of the study accounted
for 240 students. These students were learning in four grade eight sections. Out these
v
sections, 40 students were selected and included in the study sample using systematic
random sampling technique. Data were gathered using pre and post oral speaking tests.
Data were quantitatively analysed using independent sample test where mean score and
standard deviation were used. The finding of the study indicated that the experimental group
scored an average mean score of 59.50 when the control group scored 58.75 on the pre-test.
This result showed that there was statistically no significant difference between the mean
scores of the two groups at P > 0.05. After the program of the experiment in speaking skill
using audio-visual aids, however, the experimental group scored an average mean score of
70.50 when the control group scored 59.25 on the post-test and showed a statistically
significant difference between the mean scores of the two groups at P < 0.05. Overall, the
results of the study indicated that the use of audio-visual aids in teaching English speaking
skill can improve students’ speaking skill.
