This study is aimed at assessing the teaching of speaking skill in EFL classrooms at
grade 10 in Woliso High School. To this study 4 teachers and 135students were selected
randomly from 6 sections. To achieve the aim of the study both quantitative and
qualitative methods were also employed. Questionnaire and interview were used as data
collection instruments. Close-ended questionnaires that related to the teaching of
speaking skill were distributed to 135 students and 133 of them were returned back.
Semi-structured interview questions were employed to both teachers and students. The
data collected through questionnaires were analyzed using frequency and percentages
while data collected through interview were narrated qualitatively. The analysis of the
data indicated that the teachers were used teacher centered teaching methodology.
Furthermore, teachers did not frequently teach the students by using supplementary
materials. Techniques and strategies employed by teachers were less active to the
enhancement of the students speaking skill. Teachers were not made appropriate
techniques such as discussion, roleplay, oral report etc., for better speaking skill.
Activities employed by the teachers, the gathered data tools depicted that teachers were not used
properly in the teachering of speaking skill classes. The analysis also indicated that the
students did not participate actively in speaking skill classrooms. Besides, teachers did
not support their learners to be active while they teach the speaking skill. Therefore, it is
suggested that teachers should play a big role in terms of supporting and encouraging
their students to be active participants in speaking skill classrooms |
