Abstract:
Training and development are vital to enhance hotel employees’ performance to deliver
standardized hospitality service and to be competitive in the business environment. The study
examined the effects of training and development design, on the job and off the job training and
development on hotel employees’ performance in Bahir Dar city. To achieve the objectives,
explanatory research design with quantitative research approach was applied to analyze the
data collected through questionnaire from a sample of 249 respondents. Hotels and respondents
were selected using purposive and simple random sampling methods respectively. Descriptive
and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data using SPSS version 21. The finding
indicates that training and development affect most prominently hotel employees’ performance.
Pearson correlation coefficients show that training and development design, on the job training
and development and off the job training and development relationship with hotel employees’
performance is positive and strong. Multiple regressions result indicates that independent
variables had strong and significant effects hotel employees’ performance in Bahir Dar city.
Training and development design is the highest significant contributor of hotel employees
performance followed by off the job training and development and on the job training and
development. It is recommendable for hotels to pay much attention for training and development
since it improves employees’ performance.
