Abstract:
This study was undertaken to assesing the determinants opportunities, and challenges for
households’ involvement in fishing for livelihoods in Gorgora kebele in the case Lake tana.
Specifically, pattern in the number of fisheries for six years in Gorgora kebele were determined,
factors influencing household participant to be involved in fishing were examined and household
income structure was analyzed. challenges and opportunities of households were assessing
Primary data were collected through questionnaire, checklist an. Qualitative data were analyzed
using content analysis while quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, binary
logistic model. Results indicate the pattern on the number of fishers was increasing over the
years. Binary logistic model result reveal significant factors that were negatively influencing
households participant to be involved in fishing at p<0.05 are alternative income activities,
access to credit, land size, organization participation and education while household size had
positive influence. Opportunities of household participants of fishing were family business,
available fish market, short time of earning income, small initial capital and free access of water
bodies. Challenges of household of fishing production were limited government control, emboch,
illegal fisheries, climate change, over exploitation of fish, and lack of modern fishing instrument.
Furthermore, results show that 43.3% of the households’ were involved in fishing. Results
showed that fishing was the major source of income to household as it contributes to overall
household’s income which is greater than income from other sources, which are wage labor,
trade, agriculture and livestock
