The leather Industry is one of the industries which have effect on the Environment if it is not
managed properly. This research paper assessed the environmental impacts of Hora tannery
Industry and human right abuse to the downstream villagers of Modjo Town administration.
Because of The Tannery is not complying adequately with the constitution and environmental
policy of Ethiopia. As a result the study uses primary and secondary data sources. The sampling
used in this study was purposive sampling of population affected by the pollution of water to
the downstream settled villagers. Accordingly the data collected was analysed by using both
quantitative and qualitative data analysis particular descriptive types of analysis which was
used in the study are percentage and tables. There is an implementation gap between Hora
tannery and FDRE constitution that abuse citizen’s right of article 43, 44, 91 and, 92,
according to the findings of this case study. The tannery has primary and secondary treatment
plant but it had not been operated based on the standards of WHO, FAO and EPA. The main
challenges for the Tannery not conduct environmental standards and regulations adequately
are, to run the ETP too expensive financially, lack of educated person on ETP operation and
maintenance capacity, weak inspection capacity by environmental authorities, Insufficient
electricity and power interruption are the main binding challenges. This research recommends
that conducting frequent inspection and feedback by environmental authorities, allocate budget
to run ETP, educating ample of people in this fields, improving power of electricity finally
taking procedural administrative action. |
