ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY OF MÄTÄKÄL ZONE, BENISHANGUL- GUMUZ REGION FROM 1941-1991

Abstract

The major objective of the study is to reconstructs administrative history of Mätäkäl from 19411991. Inordor to conduct this thesis I used qualitative method of data analysis.In the case of datacollection the researcher used both primary and secondary sources from various institustions.The finding of the thesis indicate that :Mätäkäl zone is today home of different peoples litogether like Gumuz, Amhara, Oromo, Shinasha, Agaw .These peoples come to settle in Mätäkälin different periods of time.Mätäkäl befor incorporation to the central government for longperiod administrator by local leaders through tradistions. During the Italian facist struggle people of Metekel have great role to support the emperor in advancing to reach to Addis Ababafter exile of five years. Accordingly Emperor Haila Silassie reward tile of balambaras for notable persons.Postwar period was the turning point in the history of the area. This was dueestablishement of different government administrators. Among other things, the period witnesserestoration of the imperial rule, new administrative structures and poletical developments weexisted. The relation of the central government with Mätäkäl has been characterized by series conflicts, interactions and integrations. The new regime introduced several policies and took measures at national level which has own repercussions and consequences in the socio-economic and political life of the People. During the 1984/5 Ethiopian famine Mätäkäl recive many settlers from Tigri, Gondar, Wollshowa.
