Abstract:
In diverse Ethiopian society, the issue of managing campus environment is not simple task for
higher education administrators and government. Previous studies showed that in campus
environment ethnocentric attitudes is a common problem among students of different ethnic back
grounds, similarly now a day the prevalence of ethnocentrism in higher education is urgent and
burning issue. So the current study examines the prevalence of ethnocentrism among students in
the case of Jinka University by using quantitative cross sectional survey research design with the
sample size of 344 from2063 total population. The data gathering instrument is self-administered
questionnaire that contains demographic questions, ethnocentric attitude measuring scale. The
data analysis techniques include descriptive statistics such as independent t-test, one way ANOVA,
percentage, mean and standard deviation of the variables. The main findings of this study, shown
low level of ethnocentrism among students in Jinka University. In terms of gender difference and
residence of the participant in ethnocentrism there was no significant mean difference among the
student. But student‘s year level have a significant difference on ethnocentrism among students.
So Higher educational institutions more working on fresh students when they entering in to campus
and universities aspire to create a campus climate comfortable in which everyone feels welcome,
for students’ academic and social development.
